Nagpur: An 18-year-old schoolboy was arrested and charged with rape after he allegedly tried to terminate a teen’s advanced pregnancy with an herbal concoction after watching YouTube videos. The abortion attempt failed and the 16-year-old’s condition deteriorated, before she gave birth at home. The girl’s family swiftly moved her to a govt-run hospital early this week and the newborn was taken to a private hospital. The accused and survivor studied in the same school in north Nagpur, said Pachpaoli police, who registered a rape FIR on Thursday.Police were first alerted by Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) doctors after the survivor developed severe post-delivery complications.The accused allegedly became intimate with the girl last year at his residence when his family was away. He continued to have physical relations with the girl and even promised marriage, said police.The girl eventually became pregnant and informed the youth, who watched YouTube videos to find ways to terminate the pregnancy, instead of seeking medical help. The girl was forced to take herbal concoctions and other abortion medicines for several weeks, before she went into labour on Monday.Pachpaoli police have recorded the statement of the survivor leading to the registration of a case under relevant provisions of BNS and POCSO Act.Senior Inspector Jeetendra Bobde of Pachpaoli police station said, “The youth may have turned 18 years old now, but during the first sexual encounter he was a minor. His age at the time of the crime would be examined while deciding the legal procedure. We are completing the legal formalities and will ensure the rape survivor receives counselling and psychological support,” said Senior PI Bobde, adding the case would be referred to the child welfare committee.
