Pune: Night temperatures in Pune have dropped, with the minimum temperature at Shivajinagar falling to 18.4°C on Thursday and remaining low at 18.9°C on Friday. National Defence Academy (NDA) recorded an even lower minimum of 17.3°C on Friday. This recent dip comes after several nights earlier this month when minimum temperatures in Shivajinagar remained stubbornly above 21°C.On Thursday, the minimum temperature at Shivajinagar fell to 18.4°C—down from 19.4°C on Wednesday—before rising marginally to 18.9°C on Friday. Meanwhile, data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed that the minimum at NDA dropped to 17.3°C on Friday. The city’s night temperatures had hovered above 21°C during the first half of Oct, peaking at 22.5°C on Oct 2. While the mercury subsequently began declining—falling below 20°C on Oct 4—it rose again over the following days before this latest drop.IMD scientist S. D. Sanap attributed the recent drop to clear skies and a decline in humidity, both of which have favoured radiative cooling during the night. With less cloud cover and lower moisture levels, the ground loses heat more readily after sunset, resulting in lower minimum temperatures. However, Sanap noted that minimum temperatures are likely to rise slightly over the next two to three days as easterly winds bring moisture from the Bay of Bengal. “The temperatures are expected to increase by around one to two degrees Celsius in the next two to three days,” he said.He added that it is too early to comment on the onset of winter-like conditions or any further significant drop in night temperatures. A clearer picture of the seasonal transition will emerge around mid-Nov, when more long-term weather data becomes available.Meanwhile, IMD’s local forecast for Pune indicates a widening gap between day and night conditions. Daytime temperatures could touch 36°C over the weekend and on Monday, even as minimum temperatures remain around 19°C to 20°C. The forecast points to mainly clear skies, with daytime maximums expected to reach 35°C on Saturday and 36°C on Sunday and Monday.
