Mumbai: Motorists could get access to three long-awaited infrastructure links in the city over the weekend, with the Sion and Vidyavihar bridges and the Goregaon connector from Goregaon likely to be opened any time. While construction work on all three structures has been completed, the inauguration is awaiting the availability of the chief minister and deputy chief minister, civic officials said. The delay has drawn criticism from the Opposition, which has questioned why commuters must wait for a formal inauguration when the infrastructure is ready for use.Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray appealed to the state govt to open the Sion bridge without waiting for a VIP visit or an auspicious date.“Please don’t wait for mahurats and VIP dates to open up this bridge,” Thackeray said in a social media post tagging the Chief Minister’s Office. Calling it a crucial connector that people had waited a long time to see rebuilt, he urged the government to open it for the public, adding that citizens should not have to wait because VIPs are unavailable.Ghatkopar MLA Parag Shah said, “Opening may take place anytime of the Vidyavihar bridge as works on it are completed.”Meanwhile, locals said two-wheelers had already begun using the Sion bridge despite barricades remaining in place and the structure not being formally opened. Pedestrians have also been using the footpath for convenience, while four-wheelers continue to be kept off the bridge. The three links are expected to improve connectivity and ease travel for commuters once they are officially opened.
