Amritsar: The Amritsar police have arrested five people, including a father-son duo, and seized an assault rifle, two hand grenades and 13 foreign-made pistols, informed Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav on Thursday. Those arrested were identified as Gurpreet Singh and his son Jaskaran Singh, residents of Ballarwal village in Ajnala; and Veenu of Sagarpur, Amritpal Singh of Rasulpur and Gaurav Masih of Gounspura, all from Batala. Police recovered a .30-bore assault rifle, two hand grenades, four 9mm Glock pistols, nine .30-bore pistols and 25 live cartridges. Two motorcycles, a Honda Livo and a Hero Splendor, allegedly used to transport the consignments, were also seized.Yadav said intelligence inputs indicated that Gurpreet and Jaskaran were in contact with a foreign-based smuggler and had been retrieving drone-dropped consignments of arms, ammunition and explosives from across the border for further distribution through their associates.Acting on the input, Counter Intelligence teams raided a location near Teri village in Ajnala, where the five accused had allegedly assembled to exchange the consignment, and arrested them, he said. Preliminary investigation suggested that the foreign-based smuggler used encrypted communication platforms to coordinate the movement of consignments and evade detection, the DGP added. A case has been registered on October 15 under the Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar.
