Neha Bora released after detention, questions overnight custody

All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora, who was detained on Friday evening during the anti-SIR protests, was released early Saturday after formal procedures under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act, Delhi Police said. After her release, Bora questioned the overnight detention of protesters and alleged that police had delayed her access to a lawyer.“Under what authority is this justified? By what law or order is it permissible to keep detainees held in custody all night long? Legally, individuals, especially women, ought to be released after sunset, yet this is not happening,” Bora said.Bora also criticised the roadblocks and restrictions in central Delhi, demanding the impeachment of Gyanesh Kumar and a halt to the SIR exercise. The detentions came amid heightened security in the capital as protesters continued to demand accountability from the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.(With agency inputs)
