Mysuru: In a bid to encourage farmers to take up fish farming, fisheries department is promoting advanced Biofloc and RAS technologies that can help raise fish output and improve fish farmers’ earnings. The department has set up an exhibition stall as part of the Raitha Dasara celebration from Oct 16-18 at JK Grounds.District minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah inaugurated the stall. Fisheries minister KS Basavanthappa, excise minister KM Shivalingegowda, agriculture minister PM Narendraswamy, fisheries department director Dinesh Kaller and joint director Girish were present.Mysuru fisheries department assistant director CN Bhavani told TOI that Biofloc technology is a modern, scientific fish-farming method that uses minimal water. Under the system, microorganisms help recycle nutrients found in fish waste.Fish are reared in tanks, and maintaining water quality continuously is essential. The approach helps increase fish production in limited space. With proper management, it offers better production and income opportunities. In RAS Fish Farming (recirculating aquaculture system), water from fish-rearing tanks is cleaned through filtration systems and sent back into the tanks. By regulating water quality, oxygen levels and waste management, fish can be farmed throughout the year. This is suitable for technology-driven commercial fish production, the assistant director explained.
