Ahmedabad: Two petitioners from Gir Somnath district filed a PIL in Gujarat High Court taking exception to a garba event being held in a silent zone in Veraval. They told the court that they were not opposed to garba celebrations but objected to the event being held in a designated silent zone. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) informed HC that it inspected the venue, submitted a report and issued a notice to the organisers directing them to comply with noise pollution norms within two days. It submitted that the garba venue’s proximity to a hospital brought it under silent-zone restrictions, which prescribe a maximum permissible noise level of 45 decibels at night. The court commented that the issue extends beyond Veraval and suggested that GPCB carry out surprise inspections to ensure compliance.
