Delhi to track water leaks faster as supply checks go tech

New Delhi: A leaking water pipeline would be detected sooner and repairs would be quicker as Delhi Jal Board moves towards technology-based monitoring of its supply network. The new system is aimed at reducing water wastage and helping residents facing water supply disruptions.Delhi water minister Parvesh Verma Wednesday inaugurated an Intelligent Command & Control Centre (IC³) and flagged off an emergency response vehicle at JWIL Infra Limited’s office on Shivaji Marg. The command centre will bring water network monitoring, consumer complaints, maintenance work and field teams onto a single digital platform. This will help officials identify problem areas, track repair teams and monitor the status of complaints, making it easier to coordinate action when a pipeline develops a leak or water supply is disrupted.Verma said that for residents, the key benefit could be quicker repairs and less water lost before a leak is attended to.The system will also help officials identify areas facing low water pressure and anticipate possible pipeline bursts, allowing them to address some problems before they turn into major disruptions.A senior official said the emergency response vehicle is designed to reduce delays during major pipeline repairs. It carries high-capacity water pumps, a generator and essential repair equipment, allowing teams to begin work without waiting for equipment to be arranged for or depending on electricity being available at the site, he said. The vehicle will be connected to the command centre through GPS, enabling officials to track its location and coordinate its deployment during emergencies. The project is being executed by JWIL under Delhi Jal Board’s Chandrawal Water Supply Project, covering areas that together account for around 10% of Delhi’s population and geographical area.Verma said the focus was on reducing water wastage, speeding up repairs and making officials more accountable. He added that complaints should be addressed quickly and the action taken should be trackable.
