NLU Chancellor sets aside hostel suspension of law student in ragging case

Jodhpur: The chancellor of National Law University (NLU), Jodhpur, has set aside disciplinary sanctions imposed on a fifth-semester law student in a ragging case, holding that he was not given a proper and reasonable opportunity to present his defence. The order, passed on Oct 6 by Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Sanjay K Agrawal in his capacity as the university’s chancellor, quashed an Aug 20 order issued by the registrar’s office suspending Lakshay Ladoia from his hostel for one year and imposing additional restrictions on his campus activities.Apart from the one-year hostel suspension, Ladoia was barred from representing the university at events during the 2026-27 academic session. He was also barred from using sports facilities and the gym, attending cultural events, including the annual festival, along with accessing the library outside the stipulated hours. A directive also prohibited him from contacting the complainant and witnesses.Appearing for Ladoia, advocate Mudit Nagpal, assisted by Nishant Gaba, argued that the university had not disclosed the complaint or furnished key documents, including the anti-ragging committee’s inquiry report, medical reports and the committee’s decision. The university, represented by the registrar and anti-ragging committee chairperson, defended the disciplinary proceedings, arguing that an internal university inquiry was not required to follow the standards of a criminal trial. However, the chancellor’s order noted that the anti-ragging committee’s report recorded that Ladoia was present in the room but was not involved in a physical altercation between the complainant and another student. The report also indicated that the complainant had gone to the other student’s room on his own.The relief is subject to conditions requiring the student to maintain good conduct on campus and in the hostel. The chancellor also cautioned him to exercise care in future.
