Kolkata: The family of a brain-dead man from Hooghly has brought hope to the lives of three organ-failure patients with the family donating the organs of the deceased amid the Durga Puja festive season. The liver and kidneys of Tamal Chakraborty (59) were transplanted into the three patients on Monday. This is the 13th deceased donation in the state this year till date which comes a month after the previous one.According to the family, Chakraborty suffered an intracranial haemorrhage at their Dharampur, Chinsura home on Thursday. The state govt employee was rushed to Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals (AMH) Kolkata. Doctors briefed the family about the patient’s condition being precarious while assuring them of the best possible care. But, by Saturday, the family was informed about noticing signs of brain death, which was later confirmed by specific tests.“We had heard about the concept of brain death and the possibilities organs from the deceased being donated but we did not know how to go about it. When the Apollo team approached us my homemaker mother was the first one to decide that my father’s organs should help others survive and we consented to the donation,” said son Sagnik, an IT sector employee. While festival seasons are traditionally marked by exchanging gifts and spending time with loved ones, the hero donor and his family exemplified humanity at its highest by bestowing the gift of life on strangers in need. After the deceased’s wife Soma and son Sagnik consented to the donation, ROTTO (east) allocated the liver and a kidney to AMH while the second kidney was allocated to Kolkata Kidney Institute. Sources said all the three organs were transplanted successfully on Monday while the cornea was banked at Disha Eye Hospitals. The clinical teams at AMH lauded the donor’s family for their courage and extraordinary decision during a period of deep personal loss. While Bengal is still lagging behind states in south and western India in deceased organ donations, the state had its best donation figure in 2025 with 17 donations touching upon the lives of more than 50 organ failure patients.Even as various organisations continue to work on organ donation awareness, the figure this year has reached only 13. But they are hopeful of more donations in the coming days to surpass last year’s record before the year comes to an end.Deceased organ donor:
