What next? Outfits say protests will continue

New Delhi: With protests in the city expected Sunday as well, extensive traffic restrictions will remain in place. Metro closures and mobile internet restrictions in central Delhi, however, were lifted around 10pm Saturday.Cockroach Janta Party and Students’ Federation of India held a news briefing at 5pm and said peaceful mobilisation will continue across the country.“Civil disobedience and street protests will continue relentlessly until jails are filled and the government is held accountable. Democracy is not for sale,” the groups said in a joint press statement. No location or timing for any protest Sunday has been shared.Traffic curbs will come into force at 6am Sunday. Delhi Traffic Police had also advised commuters to plan in advance and keep extra travel time in hand if heading towards railway stations, ISBTs, or the airport via New Delhi and central Delhi.It also advised commuters to avoid non-essential travel.In a post on X, it said, “Traffic management measures are dynamic and will be relaxed or regulated based on real-time ground assessment.”CJP’s Ajinkya Shinde, who has been appointed to lead the protests after Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were detained, said an undeclared emergency had been imposed in Delhi. He claimed over 15,000 individuals, including students, civil society members, and political figures were illegally detained across the country.Alleged attempts to create divisions within the movement were also brought up at the briefing. Anish Gawande national spokesperson of the Nationalist Congress Party said, “A false attempt is being created wherein divides between the opposition and civil society actors demanding for accountability are being manufactured by a govt that is scared of young people across party lines beyond politics coming together.”SFI’s Srijan Bhattacharya said the fight against dictatorship was united. “We strongly condemned the administration’s actions in turning New Delhi into a fortified zone by blocking access to Jantar Mantar, closing metro stations, suspending train services, deploying signal jammers, and executing pre-emptive detentions at transit hubs,” he said.
