Tripura plans Rs 100-crore revamp of Dumboor hydel project

Agartala: Tripura govt plans to spend around Rs 100 crore on restoring and modernising the state’s only hydroelectric project at Dumboor in Gomati district, power minister Ratan Lal Nath said.The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), in collaboration with the state govt, has completed a technical assessment to identify the restoration and modernisation requirements of the damaged facility.The project, which had an original installed capacity of 15 MW across three units, is expected to generate about 10–11 MW after the upgrade.Work is likely to begin by Dec 2026 after the completion of detailed assessments and other preparatory formalities, officials said.Nath made the announcement during the ground-breaking ceremony for the restoration and modernisation project. The plant was severely damaged in the floods of 2024.The initiative is aimed at reviving the hydel facility, upgrading Tripura’s ageing power infrastructure and expanding its renewable energy capacity.Tripura is a power-surplus state, with gas-based thermal generation accounting for a major share of its electricity production.
