Panaji: Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 37.2°C on Tuesday, its highest Oct reading in nearly two decades. The last comparable temperature was recorded on Oct 16, 2008.“This makes Oct 13 the hottest day in Panaji in around 20 years,” said IMD director Nahush Kulkarni.According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) evening observations, Panaji’s maximum temperature was 5°C above normal, while the minimum temperature of 23.6°C was 0.6°C below normal. The Mormugao observatory also recorded significantly above-normal daytime temperatures, with the maximum reaching 36.4°C, or 5.1°C above normal. The minimum temperature stood at 23.8°C, 0.8°C below normal.Panaji has recorded maximum temperatures above 36°C for three consecutive days, on Oct 11, 12 and 13. This unusual spell of Oct heat is expected to continue over the next couple of days. The IMD has extended its yellow alert for hot and humid weather in Goa till Oct 15.Kulkarni said the unusually high temperatures were linked to the seasonal transition following the southwest monsoon and the possibility of deficient rainfall in Oct. He said the lack of adequate rainfall could allow daytime temperatures to remain elevated, contributing to prolonged spells of above-normal heat.
