Gadchiroli Ashramshala Student Dies By Suicide

Nagpur: A 14-year-old Class VIII student at an ashramshala in Sonsari village in Kurkheda taluka of Gadchiroli allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on Monday evening after her parents did not take her home to attend Durga Puja festivities in Armori.Police said a teacher had advised the girl’s parents not to grant her leave as examinations were approaching and special classes were underway. The girl, a resident of Mohgaon about 3km from Sonsari, called her parents on Monday saying she was unwell and had a dry cough. Her parents came to the school and took her to a hospital for treatment. After returning to the ashramshala, she repeatedly requested that her parents take her home so she could attend the 10-day Durga Puja celebrations in Armori, located about 15–20km from the school and known for its fair and large gatherings. However, a teacher reportedly urged the parents to keep her in school due to upcoming exams and preparatory classes, and they agreed, police said.Police said the girl was upset and did not attend classes, remaining in her room. Around 5pm, her roommates returned to the hostel and found the room locked from inside. After repeated knocks went unanswered, they alerted the warden and hostel staff. Staff broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling with her dupatta, said police.During the investigation, police found a sketch in the girl’s notebook showing a girl hanging by her waist, with two ropes on either side. At the bottom of the page, it was written, “Mar bhi gaya to kya hai” (“What does it matter even if I die?”). Police are examining the sketch to assess her state of mind, but said no other clear clue has emerged so far.The school authorities informed police and the girl’s parents. A team from Kurkheda police station reached the spot and is questioning her roommates, teachers and hostel staff to determine the circumstances leading to her death.Gadchiroli SP M Ramesh said a police team is collecting evidence and speaking with school authorities and others who knew the girl.Senior inspector Ajay Jagtap of Kurkheda police station said no suicide note has been found.
