Prayagraj: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), in a joint operation with Maharashtra Police, arrested two men wanted in a Thane murder case from Naini in Prayagraj on Friday. The accused — Santosh Kanojia and Amit Singh — were held near the selfie point under the Naini police station area around 7.30 pm, officials said. The duo was wanted in connection with a murder that took place in Thane’s Chitalsar-Manpada area on Sept 29, allegedly over old enmity related to the election of a local corporator.According to the STF, Maharashtra police had sought its assistance to trace and arrest the two accused, who had been absconding since the incident. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team of the STF’s Prayagraj field unit and Thane city crime branch tracked them down.On questioning, the accused allegedly confessed that they shot the victim with a country-made pistol and attacked him on the neck with a machete over an old dispute linked to a local election. According to the STF, three other accused have already been held, while Kanojia and Singh had escaped to Prayagraj to avoid arrest. Both hail from Cholapur in Varanasi. Kanojia was residing in Thane’s Chitalsar-Manpada area, while Singh was living in Mumbai’s Bhayandar East.The case was registered at Kapurbawdi police station in Thane under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.After their arrest, the two accused were handed over to Naini police. Maharashtra Police subsequently initiated proceedings to produce them before the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Prayagraj and obtain transit remand to take them to Maharashtra for further investigation.
