Ranchi: India must harness innovation and technology to address real-world challenges as it moves towards becoming a developed nation, Atomic Energy Commission chairperson and Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) secretary Ajit Kumar Mohanty said here on Saturday.Addressing BIT Mesra’s 36th convocation ceremony, Mohanty said technology must focus on providing clean and reliable energy, improving healthcare, strengthening food security, conserving water, protecting the environment and creating sustainable livelihoods.He highlighted the growing convergence of emerging technologies, saying artificial intelligence could complement healthcare and biotechnology, while data science, photonics, robotics and automation were transforming sectors from medicine to manufacturing.Mohanty said BIT Mesra could further expand research in areas including artificial intelligence, photonics, biomedical technology, clean energy, environmental technology, semiconductors, biotechnology and entrepreneurship.He said the DAE’s work extended beyond nuclear power to nuclear medicine, cancer treatment, agriculture, food preservation, water technologies, advanced materials, electronics and fundamental research.Urging students to pursue lifelong learning, Mohanty said many technologies that would shape their careers were still evolving.BIT chancellor C K Birla said technical expertise must be matched by adaptability, continuous learning, interdisciplinary collaboration and sound judgement. Vice-chancellor Indranil Manna highlighted the institute’s achievements. A total of 2,984 students received degrees and diplomas.
